"Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?"

a bit of a Harry Potter rant/rave:

***MAJOR SPOILERS***

I LIKED:
  • the very end of chapter 32; Snape's desire to see Lily's eyes before he dies
  • all of chapter 33, "The Prince's Tale". fucking heartbreaking.
  • Snape's memory of his worst day, when he gets flushed and says something like "i would never want to be with a mudblood like her!". totally ironic because that's precisely what he wants, but he's too much of an introverted twisted hermit boy to admit so.
  • the scene in Snape's memory where Snape conjures a Doe Patronus in front of Dumbledore
  • Snape finding Lily's letters in Padfoot's room
  • Dumbledore's flaws in his past
  • Kingsley Shacklebolt as Minister of Magic (albeit temporary)
  • Discovering that Petunia wrote to Dumbledore
  • Potterwatch radio program
  • the book seven cover (obviously the Bloomsbury edition, not the Scholastic one): you can see Griphook behind Harry, clutching onto Godric's sword! Creepy and well-hidden.

I DIDN'T LIKE:

  • James Potter, the bastard. WHY ON EARTH did Lily marry James? ksfjlsfjkldfjsdlk
  • lack of complexity in Aberforth's character
  • flaws and confusion in Dumbledore's Plan
  • Cliched epilogue (I'm just going to pretend it doesn't exist)
  • Predictable parts with no elaborate details (e.g. Snape being on Dumbledore's side was very expected, but how or why was not - all predictable parts should have been at least this detailed!)
  • This book was too short :(

QUESTIONS:
  • if Grindelwald had the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand on earth, how was Dumbledore able to defeat him in 1945?
  • What was Dumbledore's plan, REALLY? (causes way too many headaches to think about.)
  • 19 years later, who is the Minister of Magic?
  • 19 years later, who is the Hogwarts Headmaster? (JKR said it's not McGonagall)
  • Why didn't Snape have a portrait in the Headmaster's office when Harry went back there at the end, to tell Dumbledore's portrait that he's not keeping the Elder Wand?
  • What happened to Luna?!?!? (it pisses me off she was not mentioned in the Epilogue)
  • What is behind the Veil at the Department of Mysteries?
  • What did Harry's parents do to "thrice defy the Dark Lord"?
  • 19 years later, what is Harry's occupation? (ditto Ron, Hermione, Ginny)
  • WHAT KIND OF A NAME IS ALBUS SEVERUS? ugh. that kid is bound to be bullied.
  • Why was Teddy Tonks at Platform 9 and Three Quarters in the epilogue if he had already finished his years at Hogwarts (remember, it was NINETEEN years later)
  • How unrealistic is it that Tom Riddle thought that he was the only one who knew how to get into the Room of Requirement, where he hid Ravenclaw's Diadem?
  • How unrealistic is it that Narcissa actually believes Harry when she asks "Is Draco alive?" and Harry replies "Yes"?
  • What happened to: Arabella Figg, the Dursleys, Delores Umbridge, George Weasley (did he go back to the joke shop without Fred?), Viktor Krum, Hagrid, Griphook, Dean Thomas, Lee Jordan, Oliver Wood, Ollivander, Gregorivitch, etc?
  • Why was Dumbledore tempted by Gaunt's Ring even when he had already given up the Invisibility Cloak (one of the Deathly Hallows)?
  • Harry is a distant descendant of the Peverell family - does that mean he's distantly related to Salazar Slytherin? (aka Gaunt is related to Peverells and Slytherin) -- i need to read this part over again to clarify

FAVOURITE QUOTES

  • "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?" - Dumbledore, to Harry
  • Harry's line in the epilogue: "Albus Severus, you were named for two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them as a Slytherin and he was probably the bravest man I ever knew."
  • "... and Harry, whose attention had been focused entirely on the two beside the window, saw his father: slight, black-haired like Snape, but with that indefinable air of having been well cared for, even adored, that Snape so conspicuously lacked." - Chapter 33
  • Snape's dying words "Look... at... me..."
  • "You see... I'm holy. Holey, Fred, geddit?" - George, after he loses an ear
  • "It's me, I'm extremely famous." - Ron, to his kids

That's it for now. Will have a huge non-harry potter post later today. Until then, goodbye boys and girls!

jesus, i'm obsessed.

Question Answers:
1) Grindelwald was not the true owner of the elder wand because he stole it from the wand maker, so I expect it wasn't as powerful. I think that's the reason though... or Dumbledore was skilled enough to make the wand backfire onto him like Harry did to Voldemort.
5) I expect it's because Snape didn't have a funeral yet. Or because he wasn't rightfully the headmaster or something. That's a bit complicated...
6) J.K Rowling said Luna became a naturalist and went searching for Crumple Horned Snorklacks and what not.
7) Probably that same sort of white foggy place (King's Cross) that Harry experienced with Dumbledore.
9) Harry and Ron are Aurors and Hermione is with the Magical Law Enforcement. Ginny might or might not be employed.
11) Teddy was probably farewelling his girlfriend (that he was kissing).
12) Not really unrealistic. Tom Riddle was VERY ego-centric.
13) Narcissa actually has a thread of good in her. She probably used Occulmency or something or was trusting of Harry becasue she knew he wouldn't lie about something like that.
15) Dumbledore was foolish enough to think that he might see his parents and Ariana again by using the stone - unaware that it was cursed beforehand.
16) No Harry's not related to Salazar, but yes, he is somewhat related to him - even though not a 'blood' relation.
